Every Baby Is A Blessing

Since my children grew up with a moonlighting midwife mother, they have all embraced the natural way of birthing, and surprisingly enough, my sons’ wives have also bought in!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the joy of welcoming our seventh grandchild into the world. My amazing daughter in law delivered a 9 lb 5 oz baby boy after about 3 hours of labor in a water birth tub in their home!

Since retiring from my practice in 2008 I have only seen a few births and I have to say that this birth was proverbial food for my soul.

In the 20 years that I assisted women with the births of their babies, never once was it routine or hum drum to me. I have always been awed by the incredible and miraculous process of birth. I truly do not see how anyone can experience the birth of a child and not know that a divine, all wise and amazing creator is behind the giving and sustaining of life.

Seeing my grandson enter the world, hearing his first cries, and watching as he and his parents bonded in the first hours made my heart joyful and my eyes well with tears. I am truly a blessed woman who can only thank my awesome God for His gift of life.

But not every baby is blessed with such a wonderful start. Not every child will be embraced by two loving parents. Not every life will have the advantages that others may.

But the fact remains that all life is precious because all human beings are made in the image of their Creator. That very image is what gives us the dignity and beauty that distinguishes us from the rest of His creation.

As long as I have breath I will speak for the sanctity and protection of every life conceived. And Mercy House will continue to pour into the lives of the precious mothers who give them life, so that the future for two lives, and even generations beyond can be beautiful. – Susan
